The Real Cost of Public Policies on Small Businesses
As 2025 ends, small business owners are feeling the impact of government policies more than ever. Rising labor regulations, tighter compliance rules, stricter tax enforcement and immigration crackdowns have created a landscape where running a business requires more effort, more documentation and more resilience than in years past.
And while big corporations adjust with entire departments, small businesses absorb the impact directly — in time, in stress and in shrinking margins.
But here’s the part that matters:
Even amid chaos, opportunity still exists.
2026 Will Reward Those Who Are Intentional, Informed and Agile
Here are the four strategic moves I believe every small business should prioritize.
1. Budget with policy in mind – Costs increased because regulations increased. Let the truth drive your numbers.
2. Adjust your pricing to match reality – If your fees haven’t changed but your compliance burden has, you are unintentionally subsidizing policy shifts.
3. Strengthen documentation – Audit activity is rising. Clean books are your best defense.
4. Stay informed and ready to pivot – Policies can create obstacles. But they also create openings for new services, new markets and new ways of working.
A Final Thought — And a Personal One
This year I made one of the most significant decisions of my life: I relocated to Spain.
Not because everything in the U.S. was falling apart. Instead, I chose to be agile in the face of uncertainty and open the door to opportunities that didn’t yet exist. Small businesses can — and should — do the same.
You don’t control policy. You do control your response.
As we enter 2026, here’s my hope for you:
- Stay optimistic, even when the environment is uncertain;
- Stay agile because opportunity favors movement;
- Run your business with intention, not reaction; and
- Protect your margins, your peace and your future.
Thank you for letting Caja Holdings walk alongside your journey this year. I’m proud of you — and I’m rooting for you.
